Audie Murphy...the best damn dog I could've ever asked for.
Anyone who knows me knows that if there's one thing I am it's an animal lover. We happened upon Audie by a chance encounter.
We had been living in upstate NY (stationed waaaaay up near the Canadian Border) and travelled the Syracuse after finding an ad for a "FREE" Great Dane that the owner could no longer afford to care for. We met him and it was love and we brought him home...a full grown Dane in a tiny duplex apartment...along with our other crazy pets. Our place was "stuffed" with furry friends :)
Annnnnyway, as I was looking over the paperwork the owner had given us I noticed that there was a breeder contract included and that the name on the contract was NOT the same as that of the owner we had just gotten him from. I tried contacting the owner and couldn't get ahold of anyone. I noticed a clause saying that in any event the owner can't care for the Dane that he/she had to be returned to the breeder. I called the breeder to inform him/her that we had one of their Danes. I offered to bring him back to them.
My husband and I went the next day with the paperwork in hand prepared to surrender him back. However, we were met with a pleasant surprise when they offered to void the contract signed by the original owner and after seeing how happy he seemed to be with us let us keep him. Not only that but they had a new litter of puppies and a few older Dane rescues.
Knowing that Sammy (the dane we had) was playful and would likely stomp a puppy to death trying to play, we knew that if we wanted another Dane it would have to be an adult.
Along came Audie...
and my heart melted.
His previous owner surrendered him without stating the reason but we as well as the breeder, feel he was abused (another story for another day).
After months of back and forth about whether we could afford to keep such a destructive dog we finally came to an understanding with him about who was the household boss...
and now he never leaves my side.
<3 him more than words can say
